The Press Trust of India (PTI), one of the largest news agencies of the country, has done the biggest layoffs of the year. PTI has laid off over 300 employees across the country.
PTI has stated through a press release issued on September 29- “The following employees whose names are in the attached list below, are given immediate leave from the Press Trust of India job. All employees have been sent a letter of retrenchment by post. Also, his outstanding balance has also been put in his bank accounts. ”
In this notice with the signature of Chief Administrative Officer MR Mishra, no reason has been given for layoffs on such a large scale. It is being told that all these employees fired were not related to the editorial staff. He was a non-journalist working in PTI offices across the country.
A Fruitful Meeting
According to a PTI source, there was a meeting of the Board of Directors of PTI about two months ago. In this meeting it was unanimously decided that the employees would be asked to resign under the VRS (Volunteer Retirement Scheme). On this appeal, the employees showed no seriousness and kept doing their work. After this the Board of Directors decided to sack these employees.
Newslaundry tried to contact Rajeev Verma, who was on the PTI Board of Directors. Rajiv told Newslaundry, “I have resigned from the post of PTI Board of Directors a few days ago. I cannot say anything about the layoffs in PTI. ”However, Rajiv’s name is still present in the list of officials.
All attempts to contact PTI Chief Administrative Officer MR Mishra have failed. Story will be updated on contact with them. A PTI employee whose name is on the shortlisted list told Newslaundry, “There is an old reference to this. This is a pre-decided decision. That’s all I will say, don’t think that it has happened suddenly. ”
The layoffs in PTI are reminiscent of the old layoffs in the media sector. In the past years, some major institutions have had to close not only layoffs but also their bureau offices. The example of Hindustan Times is before us. Since this press release of PTI has been issued late in the evening on Saturday, a lot of information is still to come. As the information comes, we will update our copy.
